Safari and Surf in the Pilanesberg

With every animal from Aardvark to Zebra can be seen from the comfort of your own car or in a typical safari vehicle and spotting the Big Five has never been easier.

The Pilanesberg National Park, a Malaria-free area of 55 000 hectares of pristine, unspoiled natural beauty, adjacent to Sun City Resort, is situated in a long extinct volcano which is world famous geologically as it was formed by volcanic eruptions 1 300 million years ago. The surrounding Mankwe Dam with her rocky outcrops, open grasslands, wooded valleys and thickets providing a unique overlap of animal and bird habitats helps to promote healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant and buffalo. As well as a wide variety of rare and species with endemic species like the nocturnal brown hyaena, the fleet-footed cheetah, the majestic sable, giraffe, zebra, hippo and crocodile, to mention but a few.

The Pilanesberg, managed by the North West Parks & Tourism Board is, however, more than just a wildlife sanctuary to which tourists flock to – it has also spurred economic development in the region that in turn has provided social up-liftment in this once largely disadvantaged rural community.

You can explore nearly 200km (124 miles) of excellent quality roads on self-drives or guided game drives. For ‘out-of-car’ experiences, there are a number of hides and scenic picnic sites available which is a real treat as the energetic rush of being outside of your car in the wild is an unforgettable feeling.

A hop, skip and a jump over to Sun City, where travellers of all ages can delight in the many hotels and activities on offer. Thus making a safari and premium 5 star luxury trip an easy to do holiday.

Home to the Valley of Waves and sprawled along the border of the Pilanesberg National Park, Sun City Resort enjoys the fine distinction of being the only surf-and-safari destination within a two-hour drive of landlocked Johannesburg. Whether you’re looking for a romantic stay with your partner, a fun weekend getaway with friends or a North West holiday with the whole family, Sun City Resort has it all.

Spend a day on one of two world-class golf courses both designed by the legendary Gary Player, enjoy an afternoon surf in the Valley of the waves or in a tube along the lazy river while the Royal Baths provide a great place for a dip and ideal spot to soak up some rays with cocktail in hand.

Spend your evening in the casino, eating at one of the many restaurants or bar hoping the many sports bars and luxury lounges then dance the night away at the rocking night club.
