As we continue along our exploration of the Indian Ocean, along the Southern Hemisphere approximately 3075km from sunny South Africa lies a perfect year round holiday spot. Ever the Honeymoon destination, this little tropical island makes up for what it lacks in size in breathtaking beaches, unique history and fabulous languages.

Mauritian Creole (a French based Creole) is the primary spoken language, followed by Bhojpuri and French. Although English is only the mother tongue of less than 1% of the local population, it is widely spoken at all resorts throughout.

The currency is the Mauritian Rupee and is easily obtained at all the airports, boarders and mainstream hotels and with this Mauritius becomes a shopper’s paradise! Be the envy of your friends by shopping till you drop! Mauritius has become known worldwide as one of the best manufactures of quality textiles, unique designer jewelry, diamonds and wide ranges of hand crafts. The Port Louis main market (also known as the Port Louis main bazaar) is the ideal place to discover untold treasures while also a great place to try the local cuisine. Such delights to tantalize the tongue include the famous “Paratha” an Indian type roti, dholl pourri, samoosa and gato piment, are but to name a few. Then after, clear your palate on some succulent sugarcane while continuing to browse those shops!

There are plenty of activities for those less interested in retail therapy that will most definitely uplift the soul and make you feel like you belong here.

From diving and snorkeling the safe, crystal clear lagoons. Parasail or paddle skiing. Boat cruising the island or even a helicopter ride. Exploring the Botanical gardens or the unique Vallée des Couleurs La Vallee des Couleurs Reserve. A round of golf or just soaking up that vitamin D! Mauritius is paradise and should not be missed!
